Blair Gifford
Kenya Global Grant Project

Blair will be presenting on the Kenya Global Grant project.  Below is a description of the grant.

Our new Global Grant will focus on dramatically scaling up Community Health and Empowerment Clubs (CHECs) to reach an extra 114,200 people in Kenya.  This Global Grant project will be the third hosted by Kisii Central Rotary Club (Kenya).  The international club is Castle Pines Rotary Club (Colorado).  In this grant project six more village CHECs will be initiated (14,200 people).  Also, a CHEC oriented community health, economic development and sustainable leadership weekly radio show will be started (100,000 people).  In the CHEC program, local tribal leaders are recruited and trained to provide weekly experiential health trainings for 24 weeks on various topics such as clean water, nutrition, infectious disease, hygiene, improved farming techniques, better sanitation, and teen sexuality.  Participants then start 10 weeks economic trainings, including financial literacy and management, small business development, and marketing.  Also, income groups are initiated to start projects such as bee keeping, tree farming, poultry, rice farming, detergent making, and vegetable growing.  Additionally, a 6 week Leadership curriculum is provided in the 2nd/3rd year of a CHEC to ensure sustainable governance in a village.  The CHEC model is noteworthy for its outstanding measurement of impact of sustainable development.  We do base-, mid-, and end-line surveying in villages.  The results have been outstanding.  There is a dramatic decrease in household illness, improved household income and better partner relations.  Our global grant has been awarded as the top (most impactful) Rotary Global Grant in Kenya.
